Leadership and Beyond: The Quick and Easy Way!
“Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together.” By Vincent Van Gogh, the Painter. There is a direct parallel between the actions that we take and the impact of our leadership.
When asked the question in an adult class, “Do we need to be a CEO to be a leader?” the participants, vehementaly responded, “of course not.” There are many opportunities such as a coach of a sports team, heading up a project at our place of work, leading a cause in our community, participating in Boards, or taking on a Club role at school.
Regardless of where we are and what we do there is plenty of potential for leadership opportunities. But as we are moving towards our goals and dreams, we are all pressed with one important asset – time. We never seem to have enough of it. People are constantly searching for ways to do more with less. So what do we do? There are quick and easy ways to strengthen our leadership potential and obtain results in our workplaces, teams, Clubs, Associations, organizations and communities. The following are 3 ways:
1. As Stephen Covey would say – begin with the end in mind. Always know your goal or target and communicate it to those who you are leading.
2. Make Your Expectations Clear – Do you know the number one reason why people fail? It is because of unclear expectations. People need to understand their role and responsibilities. People need to know what needs to be done and why. They will figure out how to do it themselves.
3. Appreciation – One of the greatest gifts is simply to acknowledge and appreciate others around us. Sometimes, all it takes if two words “thank you” and that’s it. Some folks are not comfortable with verbally thanking others – then it is as simple as sending a card, e-mail message, pick up the phone and so on. People are more motivated when they are acknowledged for a job well done.
